Finally, Who wins the student of the year competition? How are the differences between the best friends solved ? and who ends up with Shanaya? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:-

All three debutantes make an impressive debut. They look fresh and are highly trained for their roles. You can’t single out one performance as all three make give a rocking debut. Aalia Bhatt looks stunning and has the necessary capabilities of a star. Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra look dashing and are the stars to look out for in future.

Rishi Kapoor surprises you as the gay dean and does a splendid job. He is the sole comical element in the film, and is hilarious in with his one liners and facial expressions. Kayoze Irani, son of the famous Bomani Irani also makes his debut, and delivers a knockout punch in the climax. First half of the film is breezy and has all the candy floss that all Karan Johar films have. One would surely feel very nostalgic about their younger school and college happy days.

Minus Points:

Though the movie is fast paced and young, SOTY has a basic old school story line. The movie becomes highly predictable for the last half an hour. Karan Johar creates a larger than life school set up, which sometimes is hard to believe. The heroine ending up with one particular hero is not justified at the end.

Technical Aspects:-

All Karan Johar’s films are high on technical values. The actors in all his films wear designer clothes and look smashing as always. Music of the film is a big bonus. Vishal Shekhar recreates some old numbers from the past, and intervenes them well with the current melodies. Karan Johar, who is a master of shooting romantic and wedding songs is at his best with this film too.

Dialogues are contemporary and will suit the younger audience well. Choreography for the songs Radha and Disco Deewane is stunning. Karaj Johar’s screenplay is tight and holds you on to your seat well. Though an basic story, Karan successfully presents it aptly with the current generation and makes it look more interesting. He handles issues such as jealousy, friendship and romance absolutely well in the film.

One the whole SOTY is one film which has everything going its way. Stunning actors, lovely songs and some nicely shot sequences are sure shot positives. On the flip side, the film would mostly cater to the younger generation. Finally, if you want to relive your younger days and watch some full on candy floss romantic entertainer, with some interesting thrills, SOTY is surely recommended.
