Jai Ho has had a good advance with single screens phenomenal. There are some single single theatres in places like Jodhpur, Lucknow, Indore etc which have a 25-30% better advance than Dhoom 3 or Chennai Express. The Salman factor together with action has been working like magic at single screens since Wanted in 2009 and its no different with Jai Ho.

In the UP, Rajasthan and CI belts, single screens have probably seen the best advance ever but there is a lag at multiplexes in places like Delhi, Punjab, Bangalore and Kolkata compared to the advance of other recent big openers.

Still the advance overall  is good but less than Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger and at multiplexes it is less than Bodyguard also. The film has a near perfect release with most multiplexes outside South allotting most of their screens to the film as the holdovers have either run out of steam or  were not doing well anyway.

Jai Ho is looking at a strong start at the box office all over but the expectations have also changed after the release of Dhoom 3. Dhoom 3 managed to set a record opening day on a non holiday so where as earlier a 20 crore nett figure was regarded excellent for a non holiday the stakes have gone up for Dhoom 3.

Dhoom 3 had production values which have never been seen before in India and the huge cost was evident in the promos which is not the case with Jai Ho which is a very costly film for the distributors but not in terms of it showing on screen which is important today as consumers are paying high ticket rates so come for the gloss.

So a grand looking film does add to the box office opening which was also proved by Ram - Leela which opened much better than the cast warranted and a lot was to with the fact that the product looked big.  Jai Ho has the presence of Salman Khan who is the biggest crowd puller but the market expectations of a 25 crore nett number may be bit too high as the market is basing it on Dhoom 3 collecting nearly 32 crore nett so this should do 25 approx but these things sometimes don't materialise. The advance at many single screens is actually better than Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express which were top openers of 2013 but multiplexes are less almost all over where advance is open.

The music not being a huge hit does not matter for big stars like Salman Khan but a grand look may be a problem in terms of putting up a very big number (25 crore plus). A superstar, grand look and holiday probably means 37-38 crore nett opening day business today but with Jai Ho it is banking totally on the superstar. The year has started on a slow note with only Yaariyan just about covering costs and being an average fare so it is down to Jai Ho to get the box office going again.

Box Office India Trade Network

Jai Ha has found it tough at the box office on day one. The multiplexes did not start that strongly and could not pick up while single screens started very well but at places there were cracks in the matinee and evening shows. It is cold in the North but still it should have collected much more.

It was pretty clear in the afternoon that 20 crore nett was a huge task and as the day comes to an end the collections for the film will be around the 15 crore nett range.

The film has suffered in the multiplexes with the lowest collections of a Salman Khan starrer since Wanted in 2009. The all India collections of films like Dabangg (2010) and Ready (2011) may remain lower when the final all India total of Jai Ho comes in but at multiplexes they recorded better collections. The film has been sold for huge prices in circuits where it has been sold and figures coming in from these circuits be it Rajasthan, West Bengal or CP Berar are not proportionate to the prices that distributors have paid.

Jai Ho Takes Monster Opening, Clocks 90 pc

It was expected to be a phenomenal opening, considering the film was expected to be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. But Salman Khan-starrer Jai Ho took even distributors by surprise with a jaw-dropping opening of 90 per cent, all-India.

Directed by Sohail Khan, the film is expected to enjoy an extravagant first day and a monster weekend. The film released with Khan’s fans eager to watch him on the big screen after his outing in December 2012.

In Mumbai, Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines says, “Jai Ho took an opening of over 90 per cent and it’s also house full in many centres across India and in Mumbai as well. The film has opened with excellent numbers and we expect a very good report for the evening shows as the morning shows have shown a fabulous response. The response is outstanding especially in Saurashtra and Gujarat, where the film opened to more than 90 per cent.”

In Delhi-UP, G D Mehta of Bobby Arts International adds, “The response to the film is spectacular despite the cold weather here. It has opened to 80 per cent in Delhi-UP, and being a Salman Khan film, it will work wonders at the weekend too.”

In East Punjab, Jaspal Dhingra of Nanaksar Pictures adds, “Although the morning shows opened at 60 per cent, I am expecting the collections to grow by evening as the reports of the film are very good. The weather is very cold here. Hence the morning shows took a slow start but during the noon shows the film will have fantastic numbers.”

In Rajasthan, Gaurrav Gaur of O’Real Imagination says, “Jai Ho has opened to an impressive response in Rajasthan. The film has garnered a more than 70-per cent opening and has impressive advance bookings for the evening shows. Khan has definitely returned with a bang. I won’t be surprised if the film enters the Rs 100-crore club in its first three days.”

Ravi Machchar of Sahyog Films in Nizam says, “Here, Jai Ho is a super-hit. The film opened to a decent start at 9 am, but by noon, it grew to 80 per cent in Nizam. The next few shows are almost house full. We expect the movie to clock fabulous numbers by the end of the day.”

In West Bengal, Debashish Dey of Aum Moviez reveals, “Salman Khan is back with his larger-than-life movies and, with Jai Ho, he reaches out to the aam admi with a different approach. The film has opened to 65 per cent and we are expecting business to grow. Word-of-mouth is very positive and hence it is going to be a sure-shot super-hit.”

Bh Basha of Bahar Entertainment concludes, “The film has opened to 80-per cent occupancy in most centres in Mysore. It will continue to gain momentum during the day. Salman Khan is back with a film that appeals to his audience in a grand way.”

Jai Ho - South Zero & North Hero

Chiranjeevi’s average business film of ‘Stalin,’ directed by AR Murugadoss and produced by Naga Babu is now remade in Hindi as ‘jai ho’ with Salman Khan as hero and Sohail Khan as director. The basic theme of helping one in need and taking the promise from same to help three more thus initiating a chain reaction was highly appreciated by entire South Indian film audience but movie was a commercial dud.

Salman Khan and his brothers team excited with ‘Stalin’ attempted for a scene to scene remake in Hindi as ‘jai ho.’ As per trade reports, the movie released on Friday hasn’t done any remarkable business in South while North too gave a weak commercial BO figure on opening day collecting a meager Rs. 17+ Crores in India.

jai ho Fri Rs.17.55 Cr nett. India biz only. jai ho reports are very positive. Expecting the biz to witness escalation on Sat. Tomorrow, 26 Jan holiday + Sunday should hit big numbers, says popular trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

In international markets too, Sat numbers are better than Fri. Yes, #JaiHo started slowly at places, but word of mouth is super positive.

No one can read the audience's mind. What we, the industry folk, may consider 'hot' within the industry may not be the case with the moviegoer who has to dig into his/her pocket to shell out hard-earned money to watch a film. Let's come to the point without ado. JAI HO has everything going in its favor... Salman Khan in the lead... A Salman release after more than a year... Republic Day weekend... So why didn't JAI HO embark on an earth-shattering note, like Salman's previous films DABANGG, READY, BODYGUARD, EK THA TIGER and DABANGG-2?

One can understand cinegoers thronging the cineplex to watch a film and passing judgment consequently. Either you like it or you don't. But what happens when a film starring a superstar doesn't take off? It sends shock waves across the length and breadth of the film industry. What does one attribute the not-as-expected start of JAI HO to? Varied factors...

Unlike most films that usually enjoy close to 40-45 days of promotion, the pre-release promotions of JAI HO commenced rather late. In turn, the short window of promotions affected the music of the film, which did not pick up. Unfortunately, in this case, the music was plain ordinary, unlike Salman's previous endeavors. Even otherwise, the promos of JAI HO weren't able to register much of an impact, I feel.

Another sore point was the absence of a prominent leading lady. While Daisy Shah, the newcomer opposite Salman, dances exceptionally well [she doesn't get ample scope to prove her talent], a prominent face opposite Salman, who could match up to his star power and charisma, would've only elevated the prospects of the film. Last year, the presence of Deepika [CHENNAI EXPRESS], Priyanka [KRRISH-3] and Katrina [DHOOM-3] added extra weight to the projects in question.

A section of the industry is of the opinion that unlike Salman's earlier films, which released during holidays, JAI HO did not enjoy the same advantage. This year, the Republic Day holiday fell on Sunday, hence the film never got the advantage of scoring big time on a weekday/non-holiday.

The pressure on Salman and JAI HO to set new records, or benchmarks, was immense this time. Last year, CHENNAI EXPRESS, KRRISH-3 and DHOOM-3 surpassed the business of EK THA TIGER, crossing the 200 cr nett mark in India. Salman, who is going through the best phase in his career, had to deliver. JAI HO too had to deliver, since the movie had an extensive release across the globe [5000+ screens worldwide]. But the numbers were missing...
India biz:-
Fri - 17.55 cr
Sat - 16.25 cr

The biz did skyrocket on Sunday [final numbers awaited], but the lack of a solid total on the first two days was felt by one and all.

While a lot depends on how the film fares on weekdays, the business will have to be super-strong during the coming days to recover costs. Sohail Khan has made a big, fat profit, but Eros and the various distributors who have acquired the film for astronomical prices will be hoping that they recover the investment on the film. It's a wait and watch situation right now!

Original Jai Ho's leading man Chiranjeevi to watch Salman's Jai Ho

A R Murugadoss’ Telugu film Stalin starred the Andhra superstar Chiranjeevi. Now when Salman Khan has reprised Chiranjeevi’s role, albeit in a spruced-up avatar, in Jai Ho it seems perfectly legitimate for the original hero to watch the remake hero.
Sure enough, one now hears that Salman is setting up a show of Jai Ho for Chiranjeevi and his son the reigning Telugu star RamcharanTeja in Hyderabad.
Says a source, “Salman is very very close to Chiranjeevi and his son Ramcharan. In fact whenever Salman is in Hyderabad he makes sure he spends ample time with them. Salman has even stayed in Chiranjeevi’s home. And when Ramcharan was shooting for his Hindi debut Zanjeer in Mumbai, every day unfailingly the khana for Ram’s lunch would go on the sets from Salman’s kitchen.”
In fact it now comes to light that it was Chiranjeevi who suggested that Salman and Sohail do a remake of Stalin. Says the source, “This was at a time when Salman had given dates to Sohail. But they didn’t have a script. This was when Chiranjeevi suggested Stalin to Salman.”
And now a special screening of the film is being organized for Chiranjeevi.
Says the source, “Salman is uncharacteristically nervous about Chiranjeevi Sir watching the remake. He feels, ‘Pataa nahin kaisa lagega unko.’ So he may go all the way to Hyderabad to show the film to Chiranjeevi Sir and then not attend the screening at all.”
