The year has not been an impressive one with box office collections down 8% in the first half of 2014 compared to the corresponding period in 2013 but that first event film releasing for the holiday period is here in the form of Kick and expectations are humongous with talk of opening records and challenging Dhoom 3 lifetime.

The film is that big grand action film with a superstar which appeals across the board but eventually it is pre-eid and a film can only do what the period allows it to do. The makers probably had a tough decision as to whether come on Friday as it is coming now or Tuesday (Eid) when it probably would have set an opening day record.

It is probably better coming on the Friday as it is a fourteen day window rather than that ten day window it would have got if it came on Tuesday. The advantage for a Tuesday release would have been momentum gathered right from day one but its unlikely it would have covered all of Fri-Mon business that it missed with a Tuesday release.

A challenge to Dhoom 3 lifetime is hard as that film had 21 days till two films released which had potential to find an audience and give it competition. Kick only has fourteen days and four of them will see some of the audience staying away. It is hard to say how much it will be affected by pre eid but a Krrish 3 released pre-diwali managed less than 19 crore nett on day one. In that period many Hindu's stay away from the theatres and with pre-eid its the Muslim population that stays away.

Kick has had a very good advance but as expected it is affected by pre eid. The single screen advance opened on Monday and it is quite clear that centres dominated by Muslim population are not as strong as they normally are for Salman Khan starrers.

In Delhi the advance is huge with single screens like Liberty being almost sold out until Wednesday. Other theatres like Delite and Odeon are also fantastic but many UP cities are not so strong and for Salman Khan films its always UP that is better than Delhi. This is obviously due to Ramadan as UP has a higher Muslim population than Delhi.

The multiplex advance started at large on Wednesday with good sales but again big cities in Gujarat which tend to have better advances were good but not as strong as they should be due to heavy Muslim presence in places like Ahmedabad and Surat.

The advance booking overall is not as strong as Dhoom 3 or Chennai Express for the weekend. It can be compared with Ek Tha Tiger which had a phenomenal advance for day one as it was a national holiday but the next two days were working days and pre eid so sales were less for those days. The all India pre sales by Thursday night will probably be the third highest ever after Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express.

Kick Has Extraordinary Start Considering Pre Eid

Kick has taken an excellent opening of 70-75% on average. The start is extraodinary considering it is is pre Eid. Some places have taken that 90-100% start but other places are lower. Despite it being Pre Eid the opening is similar to the initial of Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express but those films maintained well throughout the day even on the odd show timings.

This will be tough for Kick as many multiplexes have lower rates in the morning so that brings in a big audience and Muslim dominated cities will see lower collections after the first day first show craze subsides at single screens. The opening in the morning is like a 30 crore nett plus first day but as mentioned above pre Eid is likely to hit it at some point of the day.

Krrish 3 was released on pre Diwali and the initial of Kick is far better than that film and if the first day collections come out over 25 crore nett it will be phenomenal.

Kick Has Phenomenal Opening In Noida

Kick took a record breaking opening in Noida as it collected close to 100% in the morning shows before 11.30 am. There were sixteen shows in total. The opening in Noida was far stronger than Jai Ho which opened around the 80% mark. Noida is a centre which is one of the better opening centres across India

Dhoom 3 opened to 100% collections but there were only five multiplexes at the time of release compared to six now. The opening in Movietime is exceptional as that cinema tends to record lower occupancies, no film had managed to collect 50% in the first show this year till Kick.

Kick has seen an audience count of 4597 against a capacity audience count of 4653 which works out to be 98.80% from the first 16 shows. The film be be screened on a record 121 shows a day in Noida.

Kick Challenges Biggest Opening Days On Pre Eid Release

Kick is challenging the biggest openings of all time as after a huge start it has maintained pace pretty well despite pre Eid. Dhoom 3, Ek Tha Tiger and Chennai Express all had opening days in the 30-32 crore nett range and it is not out of the question that Kick can join them which would be simply historic if it happens.

There are late evening and night shows to come and pace could slacken slightly but still collections will not be far off the 30 crore nett mark and anything above 25 crore is extraordinary as the film will have bumper weekdays as a large section of the muslim population will come out on and after Tuesday.

East Punjab is the only circuit which hardly has any Ramadan affect and that circuit may possibly put up an all time record opening day collection. Bihar which has a heavy Muslim population has crazy figures and is also challenging Dhoom 3 opening day figures. Delhi/UP, CI and Rajasthan are 5-10% less. A Muslim dominated Nizam/Andhra may touch 1.75 nett crore which is 15% less than Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 which is remarkable for pre Eid.

Kick: Record Day 1 Expected
The much-anticipated directorial debut by Sajid Nadiadwala, Kick, took a gigantic opening this morning. This Salman Khan–Eid combo is expected to lock day one at a new day 1 record, Rs 27-30 crore or may be more. The film, which also features Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in vital roles, is expected to enjoy a much bigger weekend. The film released with Khan’s fans more than eager to watch him on the big screen after his outing in January, so its success at the ticket counter is no surprise.

In Mumbai, Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines says, “Kick took an opening of more 90 per cent and was also house full in many centres across India and in Mumbai as well. The film has opened with excellent numbers and we expect it to reel in Rs 10 crore today.”

In Delhi-UP, Brijesh Tandon, HK Tandon and Company adds, “The response to the film is spectacular, and despite Ramzan, the film is enjoying a great day at the ticket window. We expect it to earn Rs 5 crore today. The weekend will clock magical numbers.”

In East Punjab, Jaspal Dhingra of Nanaksar Pictures says, “Salman Khan and Eid is a combination that is outstanding for the box office. The film will definitely bring in Rs 2.75 crore today and the weekend will be massive. Let’s not forget the Tuesday Eid holiday, which will be register bumper collections. “

In Rajasthan, Gaurrav Gaur of O’Real Imagination remarks, “Kick has opened to an impressive response in Rajasthan. The film has garnered a 90-per cent opening and had impressive advance booking for the evening shows. Khan has returned with a bang and today the film will collect Rs 1.5 crore in Rajasthan.”

Ravi Machchar of Sahyog Films in Nizam says, “Kick opened to a fabulous start during the 9 am show but by noon, the film grew to 100-per cent occupancy. The rest of the shows today are almost house full. We expect this movie to garner Rs 1.5 crore by the end of the day.”

In West Bengal, Debashish Dey of Aum Moviez reveals, “Salman Khan is back with his larger-than-life movies and, with Kick, we are expecting business to grow by the night shows. Day one will wrap at Rs 1.3 crore.”

BH Basha of Bahar Enterprise remarks, “The film opened to 90-per cent occupancy in most centers in Mysore and continued to gain momentum during the day. Salman Khan is back with a film that appeals to his audience in a grand manner. Kick will collect around Rs 1 crore today.”

Rakesh Singh of Maa Sona Films in Bihar concludes, “The film is expected to earn Rs 70 lakh here in Bihar today. Salman Khan has given his fans a spectacular Eid.”

Salmania strikes again, 'Kick' storms BO
Releasing a film during the holy month of Ramadan is indeed a tough decision for film-makers/Studios, since an enormous chunk of the movie-going audience stays away from theatres, thus affecting the business of the film in question. When the release date of KICK was being decided upon, I am sure, Sajid Nadiadwala as well as UTV were in two minds, whether to release the movie on Friday [pre-Eid] or mid-week [on Eid], thus taking advantage of the festive season.Though the dates had their share of advantages and disadvantages, a Friday release would mean 4 extra days of box-office [Fri to Mon], whereas a Tuesday release would signify 4 reduced days at the ticket counters. Also, a Tuesday release, coinciding with Eid, would ensure a humongous start for the film, whereas a Friday release -- during the holy month of Ramadan -- would affect its business to a major extent. Nonetheless, with KICK embarking on an extraordinary start across the nation, the naysayers were left with no choice but to eat their words. There were reservations about the business getting affected due to its release on the last Friday of Ramadan -- a couple of days prior to Eid -- but the sea of people outside cinema halls and the House Full boards clearly demonstrated that the incredible hype surrounding the film had translated into an overwhelming start across the board. What does one attribute the splendid start to? Several factors: Salman Khan + the winning musical score + stylish stunts [the viewer got a gist of it in the promos] + power-packed dialogue ['Mere baare mein itna mat sochna, dil mein aata hoon, samajh mein nahin' has become legendary] + wonderful pre-release promotion. In fact, the pre-release buzz grew manifold at the launch of its trailer at a cinema hall in Bandra [a suburb of Mumbai] and the hardcore fans of Salman -- even those who aren't -- were expecting KICK to start with a big bang. And KICK did create the right noises when it opened! While the film has recorded marvelous figures over the weekend, its business will witness massive growth once the Eid festivities begin. The weekdays, therefore, will add to the big, fat total and the Week 1 figure would be unimaginable and unthinkable for many. With no major release acting as the roadblock till ENTERTAINMENT arrives on 8 August, KICK is expected to continue its dream run at the ticket window. Salman Khan's highest grosser is EK THA TIGER [2012], which grossed Rs 198.78 cr nett in the domestic market. Will KICK go past EK THA TIGER? Will KICK mark Salman's entry in the 200 cr Club? Let's wait and watch!

Kick First Weekend Territorial Breakdown

Kick grossed 81 crore nett in its first weekend which is just a little less than the first week business of Salman Khan's last release Jai Ho and that too on pre Eid and without a mojor holiday which jai ho had.

Rajasthan lead the way with extraordinary collections which were just a little short of Dhoom 3. It was a similar story in East Punjab which set a new record for daily collections on Sunday though the first two days were less than Dhoom 3. The other circuits all saw Ramadam affecting them to a certain degree. Some areas like UP and Nizam/Andhra were more than others

The film also behaved very well in Mysore which is probably the weakest circuit  of Salman Khan starrers. It crossed 4 crore nett in Mysore and is the first Salman Khan starrer to do this in three days. Below is the first weekend territorial breakdown of Jai Ho.
