Review : Karthikeya - Engrossing Thriller

Nikhil and Swathi have teamed up once again after the success of ‘Swamy Ra Ra’  for the thriller ‘Karthikeya’.  The movie has released today and Chandoo Mondeti is making his debut as a director.  This is our review of the film.

Story :

Karthik (played by Nikhil) is a final year medico who is known for his extremely inquisitive nature.  He never rests unless he solves every mystery that comes his way.

He goes to a small town named Subrahmanyapuram for a medical camp.  He soon realises that the town is gripped by fear about a local Subrahmanyam Swamy temple.  The ancient temple has claimed a lot of lives in mysterious circumstances,  leading to is its closure.  Anyone trying to probe the mystery is finished off by a snake.

Karthik’s curiosity is fully aroused and he decides to get to the bottom of the mystery.  But he faces unexpected threats from unexplained forces.  He takes the help of a local priest (Tanikella Bharani) and goes ahead fearlessly.  Can Karthik solve the mystery of the ancient temple?

Plus Points :

- Nikhil has performed impressively in the film. He changed his acting style for the better in Swamy Ra Ra and he has improved even more in Karthikeya.

- Good thrillers are hard to come by in Telugu Cinema and this movie is one of the few that make the cut. The director has succeeded in maintaining the suspense angle almost till the very end.  The film has quality written all over it,  in terms of cinematography and shot making.

-  The first half of the film goes by at a fast pace and the interval sets up the plot nicely for the second half. Praveen provides some comic relief as Nikhil’s friend.

- Songs are good and they have been shot very well. The flashback episodes, which have been narrated with a storyboard effect, have also been executed well.

Minus Points :

- The climax of the film is a little abrupt and leaves the viewer feeling slightly unsatisfied.  Perhaps,  the snake and the mystery element should have been used further to add to the suspense.

- One or two people close to the hero should have been finished off to increase the scariness factor.  There are certain scenes which could have been played with more elaborately,  like the scene where Nikhil’s mother roams around at night in the old bungalow.

- Swathi is a disappointment in the film. She looks quite old. A few promising characters have been wasted. For example,  the police officer,  30 years fame Prithvi and the poor old mad Sadhu.

The finer Things :

Cinematography is top notch and Karthik Ghattamaneni deserves praise in this area.  Editing is pretty good.

Chandoo Mondeti makes an impressive debut as a director. He has handled the film well.  He could have done a better job with the second half but for a first film,  his efforts are commendable.

Background music from Sekhar Chandra is very impressive.  He has also scored good music for the songs.

Verdict :

‘Karthikeya’ is an engrossing thriller that deserves a visit to the theater this weekend. Good visuals, a nice story and soothing music offset a slightly unsatisfactory second half. Nikhil has another potential hit on his hands.

Critic’s Rating – 3. 25 /5

Review : Karthikeya – Engaging Suspense Thriller

Release Date : Oct 24, 2014 Rating : 3.5/5
Director : Chandoo Mondeti
Producer : Venkat Srinivas
Music Director : Sekhar Chandra
Starring : Nikhil, Swathi
Nikhil’s Kartikheya has been waiting for a release from quite some time now. Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, this film has finally hit the screens today. Let’s now see how this Nikhil and Swathi starrer is.
The story revolves around the mysterious Subramanyeswara Swamy temple in Subramanyapuram. The temple is shut down for mysterious reasons, and all those who try to find out the reasons behind this get killed by a deadly snake bite.
On the other hand, Katrhik(Nikhil) is an intelligent medical student who is posted to Subramanyapuram along with his group. Once they land there, mysterious things start happening to Karthik and his group. A pretty upset Karthik decides to take things in his hands and solve the mystery.
What is the mystery behind the temple ? Why are people dying of snake bites ? Will Karthik be able to solve the mystery ? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:-
Major plus point of the film is the story itself. Right from the word go, the entire film is quite interesting. Kudos to the director, who has written an engaging story which has enough twists and turns. Karthikeya is a complete directors film which makes you stick to your seats with its racy narration. The suspense factor and mythological touch have been superbly executed.

Coming to Nikhil, he suits his medico role perfectly. It is quite surprising and impressive to see him perform the way he did. Nikhil had a lot of scope to showcase his atlent and he has delivered it with subtle emotions with a lot of ease. Comedy quotient in the film has been maintained quite nicely in the first with decent entertainment.

Yet another major plus point of the film is its background score. Shekhar Chandra elevates the film to another level with his tout background score and scores brownie points. First half of the film is quite engaging, and the way the love story has been weaved into this suspense thriller is quite good.

Minus Points:
Even though the film ends on a superb note, the climax is a bit rushed. May be the audience who were glued to their seats with much enthusiasm, were expecting something more from the climax.
Heroine Swathi does not have much to do in the film, and looks lost out in the plot. Second half is a bit slow when compared to the first. The film wanders slightly during this part and some unnecessary scenes take center stage for a bit.

Technical Aspects:-
Karthikeya is technically a brilliant film. Camerawork is superb as the entire temple and the surrounding set up is designed exceptionally well by the art department. The locations and the lighting used gives a peek into the superb production values of the film. Dialogues written are decent, and suit the mood of the film. Music by Shekhar Chandra is very impressive and goes with the flow of the film. As said earlier, it is his background score which lifts the film and engages you completely.

Tollywood gets a talented director in the form of Chandoo Mondeti. This youngster has impressed everyone with his debut film and has a winner on his hands. The way he narrates his story, and adds decent amount of thrill with his nail biting screenplay is quite impressive. Editing is sleek and the decent run time only adds as a plus.

On the whole, Karthikeya is one of the most refreshing films in the recent past. Novel concept, gripping screenplay, Nikhil’s performance and cleverly designed suspense elements make this film different from others and ends up as quite an engaging watch this weekend. Rating – 3.5/5

Karthikeya Review
Behind the Movie Karthikeya: Young hero Nikhil and cute girl Colors Swathi joined debutant director Chandoo Mondeti for a thriller comedy with temple backdrop. Let us see, how far the magic of ‘Swamy Rara’ is repeated here?

In the Movie Karthikeya: Story begins with introduction to Endowments Employee (Raja Ravindra) killed by snake bite while doing a research to break the mystery behind Kumara Swamy temple in Subramanya Puram. He works under Endowments Officer Pruthvi (Rao Ramesh) who believes in divinity. Along the series, a Police Officer (Kishore) and a pair of love birds are also killed in same temple backdrop.

Medicos Karthik (Nikhil) and his group of friends (Praveen, Sathya) are posted to the same village of Subramanya Puram on medical camp. Meanwhile, Karthik’s girl friend cum dentist Valli (Colors Swathi) hails from same temple village while his father (Tanikella) is a priest. Enthusiast Karthik peeps into the temple mystery and some pale secrets are unraveled in the process.

Values of the Movie Karthikeya: As per present day suspense thrillers, directors are more believing in technical department excellence rather than actual stuff in their subject. Debutant Chandoo Mondeti followed the same line of elevating thrills more by camera work, BGM and less in substance. The acceleration picked up by Chandoo in very starting of story narration declined in graph as it proceeded on. The slow paced story movement is made bearable because of new locations grabbed beautifully by the camera work of Karthik Ghattamaneni. He cranked the camera in all possible angles to generate shivers. At the same time, Sekhar Chandra’s BGM cannot be looked down. He did a very good job. Editing by Karthik Srinivas lost the sharpness in crucial climax. VFX work is high on standards. Production values of Venkat Srinivas, Magnum Cine Prime Banner are just mind blowing.

Performance wise, for the first time Nikhil gave a settled performance as medico. His character is etched neatly enthusiastically without any extras. More than the zeal in chasing temple secrets, he was good in romantic episodes with Swathi. Their chemistry is well worked. Swathi was made to look a bit hefty yet she is captivating in a less prominent role. Rao Ramesh was into his routine best. Kishore as police officer did justice but he is ended on unconvincing note. Tanikella Bharani, Raja Ravindra, Jogi Brothers also did well. Comedy portions on Praveen and Sathya are easily swallowed. Of the rest Tulasi and family of Nikhil did a decent job.

Out of the Movie Karthikeya: After the success of crime thriller ‘Swamy Rara,’ this is a suspense thriller from Nikhil and Swathi. From their view points, they have done a commendable job in author backed roles. However, problem was with lack of muscle in justifying the buildup and excitement with which the concept is driven by Chandoo. Climax is ushered in a hurry bringing in an irresolute link of Rashtrakuta kingdom. A cleverly and intelligently ran thought concluded with an unsatisfactory and unimpressive rationale. As a director Chandoo was on half way to success as bringing in a new point just before climax made entire watch needless and pointless. Despite all the drawbacks, research on Snake Hypnosis and presentation of History of Rashtrakutas are sure to entice educated viewers.

The lighter vein comedy with hero’s Know Facts about Science attitude and romantic thread drives most of the first half. Just before interval, hero enters into the temple riddle. Later on, Chandoo could have surprised viewers with series of thrills which did not happen. More interestingly, there is not even a single twist or turn in this straight narration. This kept narrational graph a straight line with slight dip in pre climax and climax. All in all, ‘Karthikeya’ is a film for knowledgeable viewers while for B and C centers this looks more like a two and half hour class on Science subject. The dichotomy on existence and non-existance of god is also discussed here.

I feel that Chandoo Mondeti lacked in cinematic sense by missing the sharpness in subject and execution. Technically and production standards wise, he had a good team to deliver. Yet, the output was only middling. Coming out of theaters, one could not recollect any single shocking episode in the so called Suspense Thriller. Chandoo could have delivered a 3.5 star rating movie, if the final element of Suspense and Thrill has stormed in shaking the viewers. Finally, if you have to burn off time… watch this movie one time but enter into cinema hall with least expectation. Good Promotions can save the film to certian extent.

Cinejosh Verdict of Karthikeya: A Thriller With Very Few Thrills.

Cinejosh Rating: 2.75/5
