Power Star’s Sensational Kushi!
“Cool Kushi in Hot Summer” was a popular tag line of the soft drink, Pepsi’s Ad. Pawan Kalyan was the brand ambassador of the soft drink when Kushi(2001) got released. Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s Kushi released in summer of 2001, 13 years back, and created sensation then. The film was directed by S.J. Suryah. Pawan Kalyan and Bhumika Chawla paired up for the first time in this film. However, the hit combination was never repeated again.
Kushi has rewritten all previous Tollywood records. The film has run 100 days in 79 centers and 50 Days in 101 Centres. Kushi become highest grosser with Rs 30 crores all over the world. Released for Sankranthi the same year Narasimha Naidu(2001) stood second to Kushi. Trade pundits predicted that it is tough for Kushi to cross Narasimha Naidu(2001) collections. But, surprising them Kushi created records in Nizam area and C centers and proved them wrong.
Kushi was a remake of the 2000 Tamil super hit film of the same name starring Vijay of Kaththi and Thuppakki(2012) fame and Jyothika in the lead roles.
Pawan Kalyan’s maverick histrionics has made Kushi to achieve that extra mile. His incomparable comedy timing made audience blown laughing away. The hilarious booze scene in Ali combination has to be recollected here. His elegance in attire and dialect sent the film rocketing high. Pawan’s prowess in martial arts helped the movie to have distinguished fight sequences designed by the star himself.
After Kushi, Pawan went underground for unknown reasons; he was not seen for two years triggering rumours and controversies surrounding his long gap due to tonsured head. The range of Kushi’s success is such that even Pawan Kalyan couldn’t repeat the feat. His subsequent film Johnny(2003), directed by Pawan himself, released 2 years later was biggest flop in his career. Fans have been expecting every film of his at Kushi’s range. Hence, Pawan couldn’t deliver any notable hit till Gabbar Singh(2011) happened. Kushi had cost Pawan a decade.
Though the feat is single handedly achieved there are other contributors who need special mentioning. Bhumika became darling star of Tollywood with Kushi with her different style and cute expressions. She got flooded with offers after Kushi.
Mani Sharma affirmed his star composer status with his out-of-the-box melodies and terrific background score in Kushi. The chartbusters like ‘Ammaye Sannaga’, ‘Cheliya Cheliya’ and remixed classic song ‘Aaduvari Maatalaku’ are favorites with the listeners even today. PC Sriram’s Cinematography is one more highlight of the movie; his technical brilliance enhanced the director’s vision. SJ Suryah’s prompt screenplay based on thin storyline made audience glued with glee. This fringe story based on egos and just one sequence of hero watching heroine’s waist is gilded with all these glitterati.
